Fresno County Board of Supervisors unanimously approves a new approach to animal control, hoping past problems stay in the past.

The County was looking for a qualified rescue organization, and made their choice with Brenda Mitchell and her team that currently runs Animal Compassion Team.

Mitchell is the President and Co-founder of ACT – and they’ve formed the non-profit service ‘Fresno Humane Animal Services’ to take on the agreement.

Of four proposals – only two met the criteria -the SPCA submitted a bid for only field services but not rescue/vets service/ adoptions.

Brenda Mitchell and “Fresno Humane Animal Services” included all aspects.

“We plan to be open door as can possibly be, we’ve watched the mistakes of other organizations and we don’t plan to repeat them.” – Brenda Mitchell, FHAS.

The County will continue to own the animal shelter and will be in a three year contract with FHAS with two more optional one year extensions.

A number of speakers showed up in support of Mitchell.

“The service they render – the animals that come through our doors its spectacular – we have been nothing but thrilled with their maintenance and the people they choose to involve themselves with.” – Stacy Hough, Executive Director, Hope Animal Foundation.

Supervisors raised questions if Mitchell’s group could handle all the requirements – she said “yes.”

Supervisor Henry Perea asked Mitchell her goals: “I think our goal as a County and as a community should be simple – to obtain ‘no kill’ in our community” – Brenda Mitchell, FHAS.
