MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A powerful storm caused a massive pile-up on a highway in Madera County on Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 1 pm on Highway 152 near Road 17, just south of Chowchilla.
The California Highway Patrol says roughly 20 cars were involved in the accident.
Investigators say it was a dust storm that caused drivers to lose visibility and crash into one another.
Action News spoke with drivers who say it was a very scary situation, but they are happy to be alive.
“It was terrifying, it was just terrifying. We got hit, we thought we were okay, then we got hit again, and again. We just thought it wasn’t going to be over. I really thought we were going to die. And I’m really thankful we’re okay, said Delissa Fulce, a Oakhurst resident.
The CHP says there were several people who were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
As we continue into the winter months, investigators encourage people to be alert while on the road.
If you do find yourself in a weather event, they say it’s very important to be cautious.
