FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama has now been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation into allegations of an “inappropriate off-duty relationship continues.
Fresno City Manager Georgeanna White has confirmed that Deputy Chief Mindy Casto will take immediate operational control of the department.
In an email sent to the department, White said the decision was for the ‘best interest of all parties involved.’
The news comes hours after Balderrama asked for grace and forgiveness outside of council chambers on Wednesday morning.
The investigation into Balderrama began after he informed the city that allegations would be made against him in Feburary.
Balderrama has been the chief of the Fresno Police Department for three and a half years.
This is developing story. Our story from earlier follows.
During a city council meeting on Wednesday, Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama addressed members of the media in the hallway regarding allegations he’s facing of an “inappropriate off-duty relationship with a non-city employee.”
“This is the most difficult time in my life and my family’s life,” Balderrama said outside of council chambers. “I’ve never claimed to be perfect.”
Balderrama asked for grace and forgiveness from the public as the investigation continues. He said he has received “hundreds” of messages from the community with bible verses and words of encouragement, even pulling out a rosary he says an officer gave to him.
“My family’s not doing well, and I’m not doing well,” he said.
