That new pest is called the Carpophilus Beetle.
According the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, this beetle is infesting almonds and pistachios in the San Joaquin valley.
The Carpophilus Beetle is one of the most destructive pests facing almonds in Australia.
It feeds on the kernel which reduces yields and quality of almonds.
So far in the San Joaquin Valley, the beetle is confirmed in Stanislaus, Merced, Madera and Kings Counties.
The only way of managing this new threat at least for now is with crop sanitation since the beetle spends most of its life inside the nut.
