Reedley Police Department Missing Police Dog – Update
It is with deep regret that we inform you of the unfortunate discovery of Kona, who has been diligently searched for since July 4, 2023. We have found him, but unfortunately, the outcome is not what we had hoped for. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of his passing.
Kona, a beloved German Shepherd dog, was found deceased on July 6, 2023, just outside of Visalia in the 14000 block of Avenue 280. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to provide the happy reunion we all wished for. It appears that Kona was struck by a vehicle and crawled into a vineyard, where he succumbed to his injuries. The California Highway Patrol has been contacted and will evaluate whether a hit-and-run report will be taken.
We understand the emotional impact this news may have, and we extend our sincerest condolences to the Officer’s family and all those who had been tirelessly searching for the dog.
We want to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, support, and concern throughout the search. Your dedication and compassion were truly inspiring during this challenging time.
Please take a moment to remember Kona and keep his handler in your thoughts during this difficult period of grief and loss. We hope that he and his family find solace in knowing how many people cared deeply about the safe return of Kona.
In our preliminary examination, we observed surveillance footage of Kona using force to remove wooden fence panels in order to flee the backyard. This occurred following his escape from the garage area when fireworks were set off. The police department will proceed with its investigation of the matter.
Once again, we deeply regret having to share such devastating news, and thank you all for your unwavering support.
Sincerely,
Jose L. Garza
Chief of Police
REEDLEY, CA (KMJ) – There’s now a $2,000 reward for information leading to the safe return of missing K9 Kona.
The Reedley Police Officers Association is offering the reward money.
Reedley Police say Kona got spooked by 4th of July fireworks around 11:00p.m. Tuesday night.
He escaped from his police handler’s garage in Visalia.
The 10-year-old German Shepherd’s collar had a tracker, which led the officers to the vicinity of the 14000 block of Avenue 280 near Road 148 outside the city limits of Visalia.
Unfortunately, the tracker detached from the dog’s collar and the search continued.
The dog has not been seen.
Please keep a watchful eye out for K9 Kona and contact the Reedley Police Department ASAP if found. Kona was last seen at his handlers home near Ave 280 (E. Caldwell Ave) and S. Lovers Lane, and escaped last night after becoming agitated due to fireworks. The tracker on his collar lead officers to search the area, but was to no avail, as the collar had become detached from Kona’s neck.
Police Chief Joe Garza said the department is “extremely worried about his well-being.”
Officers on foot, in patrol cars and with a drone have searched more than eight square miles near the handler’s home in Visalia, to no avail.
Kona weighs 80 pounds with a sable-colored coat and was last seen wearing a black nylon collar. Reedley Police say the dog has experience dealing with the public and is well-trained and even-tempered.
Call the Reedley Police Department if you spot Kona the K9.
Tip lines have been set up in English (559-356-8990) and Spanish (559-246-4183).
