(KMJ) – Fresno County’s Sheriff get permission from health officials to fly surplus COVID-19 vaccine doses to Northern California.

And the Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing how this life-saving mission came to be:

Tuesday, Sierra Pacific Orthopedics (SPOC) contacted Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims regarding transportation suggestions for the COVID vaccine. SPOC had learned Humboldt County was short 3,000 doses to take care of vaccinating its citizens this week. SPOC had a surplus of vials and wanted to help, but needed to figure out how to get them to Humboldt County.

Sheriff Mims checked with the Fresno County Health Department to see if she could arrange to have these doses of the vaccine transported north.

Once she got approval, she designated the Sheriff’s Air Support Unit to use its fixed-wing airplane to fly the vials to Humboldt. On Wednesday morning, deputies flew there and delivered a cooler (see below) to deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. They even made the delivery in time so that 400 people did not miss their appointments on Wednesday.
