UPDATE: Judge rejects defense motion to delay trial for accused “Golden State Killer.” Defendant Joseph James DeAngelo’s preliminary hearing will take place on May 12th.

SACRAMENTO, CA (KMJ) – In Sacramento Superior Court, defense attorneys are seeking a new delay in the case against suspect Joseph James DeAngelo.
The defendant has been dubbed the “Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist.”
Joseph James DeAngelo is accused of terrorizing California in the 1970s and 80s.
Appearing in Sacramento Superior Court, DeAngleo is facing 13 counts of murder with another 13 counts of kidnap for robbery – in connection with rapes that allegedly took place during a series of violent crimes in California.
His defense team says there are so many charges that they don’t have enough time to provide effective representation for their client.
They are asking the judge to delay scheduling a preliminary hearing.
DeAngelo is suspected of 12 murders, 45 rapes and over 120 burglaries that took place in the 1970’s and 80’s.
He was apprehended on April, 24th 2018.
DA’s from six counties decided on a joint prosecution of the crimes; Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley, Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward, and Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten are all participating in the case against him.
Six jurisdictions were putting forward charges, and Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward was one of five County DA’s present as the charges were presented in August of 2018.
Forensic genealogy was used to develop leads in the case.
