HANFORD, CA. (KMJ) — DNA evidence left at a home burglary in Hanford has resulted in an arrest nearly a year and a half later.
Deputies were investigating a burglary off Highway 198 in July of 2018.
The homeowner says the back door was found open and a doggie door installed on the back door had been removed.
The homeowner discovered the upstairs bathtub water faucet left on causing flooding and considerable damage.
A riding lawnmower in the garage was also tampered with but not taken.
Deputies collected evidence, which included a cigarette butt left on the overflowing bathtub.
The cigarette was sent to the Department of Justice to be processed for DNA.
The DOJ notified the King County Sheriff’s Office that a possible match came back on the cigarette.
The DNA match belongs to Karl Jensen, who was already in the Kings County Jail for a different crime.
Deputies collected a new DNA sample from Jensen and also tried to question him but he refused.
The investigation was sent to the Kings County District Attorney’s Office for the prosecution for the burglary and damage caused to the residence.
