(KMJ) – For the second time this month, Pacific Gas and Electric has cut power to tens of thousands of customers in the name of public safety.
As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the bankrupt utility began cutting service to nearly 180,000 households and businesses in 17 Northern and Central California counties.
PG&E says gusty winds could cause trees to come into contact with power lines or dried out vegetation throughout its territory. CEO Bill Johnson says these safety shutoffs have nothing to do with the utility’s system or equipment and are base solely on forecasted weather conditions.
Pacific Gas and Electric says service to its customers should be restored 48 hours after conditions improve. But, it adds a third round of safety shutoffs may be necessary this weekend,
