FRESNO (KMJ) – State officials say the new ammunition background check law stopped more than 100 people from buying bullets in its first month.
Attorney General Xavier Becerra released the early results of the ammo law.
It took effect July 1.
Gov. Gavin Newsom says the federal government should follow California’s lead in requiring background checks for ammunition buyers.
In a legal filing, Becerra said many others were likely stopped from trying to buy ammunition they cannot legally possess because of a past conviction or mental health commitment.
A federal judge is expected to decide later this month whether to halt the law as a violation of the second amendment right to bear arms and other federal laws.
