SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A new public engagement campaign is calling on San Franciscans to put aside political differences and tackle the city’s homeless crisis with the urgency the issue deserves.
Philanthropist Daniel Lurie, founder of the nonprofit behind the new “All In” campaign, hopes to inspire residents to support building or finding homes for 1,100 people by 2022.
The campaign has the support of the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers, as well as Airbnb, Google, and dozens of other businesses and nonprofits. It launches Thursday.
Housing is a contentious issue in San Francisco, and fights over proposed homeless shelters or new development are common.
Residents of San Francisco’s Embarcadero, for example, are suing the city for approving a temporary homeless shelter along the waterfront, saying it is the wrong fit.
