FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – An arrest is made in a case from back in April where two parents were gunned down in their car, which ended up in a canal.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says two gang members opened fire on five people who he says were not gang members, inside a car back on April 28, 2019.
Chief Dyer says 19-year-old Kiera Austin and 20-year old Brian Maxey had just visited The Parks at Fig Garden Apartments, at 855 West Ashlan, by Fruit.
“There was an exchange of words took place between people in car and the Northside gang members. 20-year-old Donovan Kelly AKA ‘Doughboy’ pulled out a handgun, pointed that handgun at the vehicle and and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle.”
A second suspect also fired multiple rounds as the car was fleeing, ultimately the vehicle stuck the wall, both were killed, their vehicle ended up in a canal.
The suspects ran after and continued to fire.
A Crime Stoppers tip lead to the arrest of Kelly on Sunday, July 21.
He’s charged with 2 counts of murder, 3 counts of attempted murder and one count of intimidating a witness.
Police say he had a prior record.
As the detectives were conducting parole searches at The Parks at Fig Garden Apartments complex – people came up to thank them – saying it was not the first time that people visiting the complex had been approached and confronted.
Chief Dyer says gang members were controlling the complex.
“We are asking for the public’s assistance to ID the second suspect, armed with a rifle and revolver – the firearms in the shooting, and any info involving past shootings including homicides that Donovan Kelly was involved in.” said Chief Dyer.
Dyer says the other suspect is an African American male, and police believe people know where the firearms are hidden, and know any past violence and homicides that will help them to clear cases. Police believe Donivan Kelly has been in other cases in the city – past shootings and past homicides.
Chief Dyer said the shooting left three children without parents -Kiera Austin had twins of her own, in addition to the bay with Maxey.
“We have children that have been left behind, we have also a 4-month-old and both mother and father are deceased. The least that we can do is bring some form of justice to those responsible for murdering their parents,” said Dyer.
