PHILLIPS (KMJ) — Figures from the first snow survey of the year at Phillips Station show a below average snowpack. Officials with the California Department of Water Resources placed it at 80% of average to date, with a snow depth of 25.5 inches.
The DWR also revealed that the statewide snow water content stands at 67% to date.
“While these results are below average, they are a stark contrast to where we were last year where there were just patches of snow at this location,” said Water Resources Engineer John King.
“The season’s still early. Anything is possible between from now until May.”
The snowpack supplies around 30% of California’s water needs as it melts in the warmer months.
The next snow survey is scheduled to take place early February.
