FRESNO (KMJ) — The family of Fort Washington Elementary’s Vice Principal, killed following a hit and run in Fresno, have asked anyone who can help identify the suspect to come forward.
The appeal follows the death of Gavin Gladding, who CHP said was out jogging around 6am Sunday morning when he was struck by a black pickup truck close to Friant and Copper. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Crash investigators are actively looking for a dark colored, possibly black, 2005 to 2007 crew cab Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra, with a possible shattered front passenger window and front end damage. Anyone with information can call CHP on (559) 262-0400 or Valley Crime Stoppers on (559) 498-STOP.
“Gavin was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend to many,” wrote the Gladding family in a statement.
“He was a beloved teacher and educator in Clovis Unified since 2005. He has touched many children’s lives as their teacher and as the Vice Principal at Fort Washington Elementary.”
Clovis Unified School District has already taken steps to help staff and students affected by the tragedy. Psychologists will be available throughout the week as those impacted process the weekend’s events.
The flag outside Fort Washington Elementary was at half staff Monday morning as parents and children arrived. Memorials had been set up featuring flowers and letters from children and parents.
“He was well known around here,” said parent Joe Gonzalez. “We bumped into him a couple of times here in the morning when we drop our kids off he’s out greeting the kids and now it hit home because we knew him.
“It’s sad for us to hear this news.”
