FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – UCSF Fresno is holding its seventh annual “Mini-Medical School” to share health information with the community.
The series of lectures will cover important health trends and topics for the whole family, from pediatric issues to health care costs and tips to keep your wallet in good shape .
The public is invited to ask questions of leading experts in medicine and health sciences.
The Academic Senate at UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program is presenting the series on the following Tuesday evenings; Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research is located at 155 N. Fresno Street, at the corner of Divisadero in downtown Fresno. Parking is available on the second floor of the East Medical Plaza garage in the sections marked “Patients and Visitor Parking.” Participants should obtain a ticket when entering the garage and bring it with them for validation by the security officer at UCSF Fresno.

Navigating Social Services in Fresno: Advice from a Social Worker
Presenter: Gerald Neufeld, LCSW
Licensed clinical social workers support the emotional and mental health of individuals and families through counseling, assistance and other services. Mr. Neufeld serves patients and their families at Community Regional Medical Center in the busiest emergency room in the region. His humor, warmth and compassion for everyone is evident. The critical need to support and expand social services within health care and beyond will be demonstrated and discussed.

Medical Informatics for Patient Health: The Future is Now

This session will walk participants through the apps and websites that can help patients understand how to better manage their medications, monitor their progress from home, and meet supportive people with similar conditions online.
A Phone Call Could Save Your Life: Hotlines to Keep on Speed Dial

Every day, California Poison Control fields calls from parents, paramedics, nurses, pharmacists and doctors who want to discuss poisoning emergencies. Other hotlines save and improve lives every day. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Mother-To-Baby Advice Line among others also will be shared and discussed.

Simulation in Medical Education: Hands on Experiences

Ever wonder how doctors learn to be doctors? Transitioning from medical student to physician requires deliberate practice of medical decision making skills and procedural skills prior to taking care of real patients. Lecture participants will experience firsthand the application of high-tech simulation in medical education, and learn hands-on first aid for minor emergencies like nosebleeds and wounds.
Hands-On Workshops
Mini-Med School students will interact with high-fidelity mannequins and task trainers, including the latest technology used to teach medical students and physicians.
