Highway 41 Into Yosemite Open As Ferguson Fire Threat Subsides

YOSEMITE (KMJ) — Highway 41 into Yosemite National Park is open again, following a closure prompted by the Ferguson Fire.

Full containment on the Mariposa County based blaze was announced on Sunday and it means areas impacted can return to normal. The route, also known as Wawona Road, became accessible to the public Friday morning and means travelers using Highway 41 can reach Yosemite Valley.

“It’s definitely a sign that we are able to return to normal operations. We’re getting people and roads back up and running, getting people back into the park,” explained the park’s Jamie Richards.

“For all the employees, and the residents in our gateway communities, all the visitors that want to come here we know that trying to get into Yosemite Valley is really important and we’re happy to be able to get all three roads back up and running and get everyone back into the Valley.”

Visitors have been warned that Glacier Point Road, from the Glacier Point turnoff to the top, will remain closed due to ongoing fire activity. Drivers are also asked to be aware of rocks or dirt possibly falling into the road.

“There may still be hidden hotspots, there may be hazards such as falling tree snags, so for everyone’s safety stay on the roadway,” added Richards.
