FRESNO (KMJ) — A war of words is erupting between Fresno’s Mayor and one of its Councilmembers after each put forward plans to encourage more businesses to the city.
Councilman Garry Bredefeld’s proposal, the “Money Back Guarantee/Business Streamlining Act,” is due to be heard by Fresno City Council on Thursday. It would set up time limits for City of Fresno development staff, with failure to meet those deadlines resulting in a financial credit going back to the applicant.
“This ordinance changes the culture. It holds the City accountable and the people who work there doing business accountable,” explained Bredefeld.
“That’s what we need to do…we need to act now.”
Bredefeld had critical words for Mayor Lee Brand’s proposal: “Business Friendly Fresno 2.0!” That plan includes forming a committee of members of the business community who will complete a review and evaluation of the City’s business permit and planning process. Both plans were unveiled in January.
“The Mayor’s been there for nine years,” said Bredefeld.
“In his tenth year he’s decided to study the problem. I think everyone knows what the problem is. It’s a planning and permitting process that takes forever.”
In response, Mayor Lee Brand said Councilman Bredefeld’s proposal creates a problem to solve a problem, and will not punish those making the mistakes.
“Unlike [the] Councilman, I ran a successful business in the private sector for 38 years and I’ve personally dealt with these issues in building houses and apartments and pulling permits around the Valley.
“My style: I’m a collaborative who brings people together to solve problems in a comprehensive manner.
“My administration is leading the charge in bringing new business to the City of Fresno: Amazon, Ulta, more to come.”
