Manchester Attack: Chief Dyer Says Don’t Live In Fear

FRESNO (KMJ) — Law enforcement all over the world is now on alert after the deadly terrorist attack in the United Kingdom; but Fresno’s Police Chief says fighting it begins with awareness.

“The way that we ensure that occurs is we’re part of the FBI Joint Terrorism task force, and we are ensuring that we’re not only sharing information locally but throughout the nation and throughout the world.”

Among the 22 people confirmed dead after the bomb exploded is an eight year old girl. They were all in the Manchester Arena Monday night to see Ariana Grande in concert. The explosion itself took place as people were leaving the venue.

“Controlling the egress is just as important as controlling the ingress,” adds Chief Dyer. “That is making sure that when people are coming into that event is that they’re not carrying any type of weapons or explosives. But generally you don’t expect that to occur when people are leaving.”

“I think that is something obviously law enforcement needs to be prepared for. I think as the details unfold on this terrorist attack we’re going to learn more and more about specifics.”

But Chief Dyer is calling on all Central Valley residents not to live in fear following the event, as that’s what those who perpetrated the attack are trying to do.

“I really believe that the main thing is for citizens to try to do everything they can to live a normal life, not to live in fear, because that’s really what the terrorists want. They want people to have their lives disrupted, to live in fear, and when we do that as Americans or anywhere else in this world – they win.”
