ATWATER, CA (KMJ) – The driver of a gas tanker truck was killed after his rig rolled and exploded in Atwater Tuesday morning. The frightening incident occurred off Highway 99 and Applegate Road next to a busy commercial business park. The huge explosion sent thick black smoke into the sky which could be seen for miles.

Video surfaced on social media shortly after the blast, showing employees from a nearby Panda Express fleeing the flames, running for safety.
Hazmat crews responded to check storm drains for potential fuel leaks. Southbound 99 was closed for a hours while traffic was diverted.
