CLOVIS (KMJ) — A pair of kittens, trapped around 12 feet underground, are now safe after quick thinking Clovis Firefighters built a lasso to get one of them out.

The other was coaxed to freedom by staff on site before crews arrived at the scene Tuesday morning. It all happened close to the intersection of Barstow and Sunnyside Avenues.

“Clovis Fire, as well as Clovis PD animal control, we were able to build a device that’s kind of  similar to the dog snare, and we were able to lasso the kitten from the wall pipe,” explains Battalion Chief Jim Damico.

“It took us about 30 to 35 to minutes to be able to coax the cat to get into the snare, but then we were able to successfully rescue the cat.”

The kittens were then taken to the Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center.

“Our guys were able to think on their feet and come up with a little contraption to rescue the kitten unharmed…they definitely used some MacGyver skills this morning.”
