FRESNO (KMJ) — A school scholarship fund is being set up in memory of two people who lost their lives in the Downtown Fresno shooting spree.
Mark Gassett and David Jackson were both clients of Catholic Charities, and were killed close to the group’s Fresno office on North Fulton Street. The events of Tuesday April 18th heavily impacted staff, but now they’re now turning that into something good.
“This was a random, senseless act of hate, but we still feel like there has to be something that we can do,” says Executive Director Kelly Lilles. “These scholarships will ensure the memory of the victims lives on in a way that reminds others of hope, love and compassion.”
Officials are setting up two $2000 scholarships for anyone living in the Fresno, Merced, or Bakersfield areas to attend a local school or college. To enter applicants need to complete a 500 word essay on what the scholarship would mean to them.
That should be sent to: Catholic Charities, ATTN: Scholarship Committee, at 149 N. Fulton Street, Fresno, CA 93701.
Successful recipients will be announced in the Fall.
The suspect in the Downtown Fresno shooting spree appeared in court Thursday morning to answer charges relating to that incident. You can read more about that clicking here.
