Bravery And Life-Saving Acts Recognized By Fresno Fire

FRESNO (KMJ) — Some of Fresno Fire Department’s most exemplary acts are now being publicly celebrated after an awards and promotional ceremony inside Fresno City Hall.

The Medal of Bravery is one of the most prestigious, given to those who “disregard personal safety in an effort to save a life or property”. The Wednesday morning ceremony saw that honor handed to Firefighter Rene Gonzalez.

The crowd was told that, while off duty on October 21st 2016, Gonzalez came across an accident on his route home. Multiple vehicles were involved; two suffering heavy damage and one on fire.

Those gathered inside the Council Chamber heard how Gonzalez stopped, rushed to the driver, and used a metal pipe to help free her from the car while it was on fire.

“That was really moving,” says Mayor Lee Brand.

“He risked his own life, there was fire and smoke. It was like a movie. He goes in without any concern about himself and rescues the woman and really saves her life.”

Four crews also received the Star of Life. Deputy Chief Richard Cabral detailed how teams responded to a cardiac arrest, resuscitated a man back he was found not breathing, and another who had collapsed shortly after receiving preliminary work to start dialysis.

“These folks are well deserving of these honors,” concludes Deputy Chief Cabral.

“They save the lives of people, and that is consistent with our Fire Department,” says Fresno Mayor Lee Brand. “I’m very proud of them.”

Of the officials present, it was the first in his capacity as Fresno’s Mayor.

“I think it sends a message that the Mayor, the head of this city, appreciates and supports the tough job that firefighters have.”
