(KMJ) – A police pursuit ends in a shoot out in Merced County.
Turlock Police say they were serving a search warrant Thursday night, investigating a 2016 homicide. When they arrived at the home to serve it, police say the man they were trying to make contract with – identified as 41-year-old Kevin Mayhew – was packing a rifle into his vehicle’s trunk, and then took off. Detectives and unmarked officer followed, attempting to stop the vehicle, but a chase ensued. It ended when police were able to disable his vehicle in Merced.
Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke says that when the suspect got out of the vehicle, he started shooting at officers with a semi-aautomatic rifle. Turlock Police say they were on scene, along with Merced Police and Merced County Sheriff’s deputies. No officers or deputies were injured, but Mayhew was shot. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Turlock Police say Mayhew has been released, and booked into the Merced County Jail for attempted homicide of a police officer.
