FRESNO (KMJ) — The rain due in the Central Valley this week, is actually adding to what’s already a record-breaking year.
“In the Fresno area so far this is the wettest start to the water year, which begins on October 1st, since 1997,” explains National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Rowe.
He says we’ve received some significant systems in this past year.
“Records for Fresno date back to the 1880s, and so looks like over the course of about 120 years we’re ranked number 8 wettest so far water year to date.”
That’s measured at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, and does not take the snowpack into account.
“Right now state-wide, according to the California Department of Water Resources, the state stands at 173% of normal for this date.
“If we extrapolate that out to April 1st average…where we tend to see the peak measurement for any given year, we are at 116% even of the April 1st average.”
Compare that to the 2014 figure, when the snowpack stood at 16% of normal.
