FRESNO (KMJ) — A bi-partisan bill to help prevent identities being stolen is now in progress at the federal level.
Valley Congressman David Valadao introduced the ‘Social Security Fraud Prevention Act’ Tuesday, alongside fellow California representative Eric Swalwell.
H.R. 624 is designed to reduce the number of times Social Security Numbers appear on government issued documents.
“Our federal government should be working to protect our nation’s veterans and children, not actively contributing to the occurrence of this crime,” explains Valadao.
“I am proud to introduce this commonsense legislation to remove Social Security Numbers from government documents when they aren’t necessary.”
Identity theft is described as one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, with children being at a particular risk.
