FRESNO (KMJ) — Governor Jerry Brown is asking President Obama to permanently ban new offshore oil and gas drilling in waters off California.
In a letter sent to The White House on Tuesday, Brown requested that the coast be withdrawn from new federal leasing agreements.
“California is blessed with hundreds of miles of spectacular coastline, home to scenic state parks, beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, and thriving communities.
“Clearly, large new oil and gas reserves would be inconsistent with our overriding imperative to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat the devastating impacts of climate change”.
Governor Brown asks President Obama to make permanent the protection of the ocean waters. He adds that he doesn’t know if President-elect Donald Trump would have the authority to overturn that.
