(KMJ) Are cheerleaders athletes? Yes, according to California Assembly. Well, at least a vast majority of its members think so.
In a 71-3 vote on Monday, the Assembly passed a bill that would recognize cheerleaders as athletes and cheerleading a “sport”.
“It’s time the CIF recognizes competition cheer as an official sport,” said Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) who authored the bill. Gonzalez cheered at Stanford University. She went on to say after the vote that cheerleading is “the most dangerous sport for high-school athletes” and deserves better regulation.
The legislation next goes before the California Senate.
