John Shafer of Whitie’s Pets passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at the age of 71.
He was a child when his family moved from Palmdale and bought the pet store from the original owner in the late 1960’s
Shafer would eventually take over the business as owner.

He was also a well known drummer who played in several local bands, and was called a ‘Musician’s musician’ in tributes pouring in on social media.
“This guy right here, Mr. John Shafer is a Musician’s Musician. He is admired by his peers more than anyone I know. To play music with John was beyond a privilege. He brought out the best of everyone he was around. Our hearts go out to Dixie, his kids and grandkids. I’m gonna miss lockin’ horns with him in a deep groove that felt like you never wanted it to stop. Spread those wings my friend. I’ll see ya on the other side,” wrote Don Heflin, on Facebook
Shafer served as a board member of the Valley Music Hall of Fame.
He had appeared on the Marc Kaeptan Show.. here on KMJ. Listen to the report by KMJ’s Liz Kern.
