FRESNO, CA (KMJ) One of the more prominent figures in KMJ’s 102 year history has passed away.

Al Smith died Saturday evening at the age of 86.
Smith, who’s voice has been heard on the Legends & Legacies feature, led the KMJ crew to massive ratings success for more than 15 years.
He then took his talents to the Fresno Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and served as its CEO for a decade until his retirement in 2016.
After receiving the sad news, KMJ host Ray Appleton said “Al was a born leader and a good time was to be had by all and he would darn well make sure of it! You knew as soon as you met the man that he was special”. He went on say “Dear God, this one hurts”.
Smith’s successor and current KMJ GM Patty Hixson said, “I loved Al. I began working with him in ’87 and have spent my career in radio cherishing every minute I have had with him. He was a great friend and mentor. So many great memories…this is crushing news for all of us. Especially his beautiful family who he loved and cherished so deeply. The sadness is overwhelming.”
God bless the entire Smith family

PG&E government relations official Nathan Alonzo posted on social media: “This good man changed my life and helped set me on the trajectory I am today”.
The New Orleans native spent more than 60 years in the broadcast industry.
“The New Orleans spirit never left him!” Hixson went on to say. “He embodied everything about the energy of that city. He was a great musician and had so many great gifts that he lovingly shared with so many of us… God bless you Al Smith! May your trumpet blare in heaven for all those loved ones who have passed before us! You will be so deeply missed. Hearts are broken everywhere!”
