SANTA CRUZ, CA. – The National Weather Service is calling it “ominous wave action” and is warning visitors to stay clear of the volatile Pacific heading into the Christmas season.
Monday afternoon, a portion of the Santa Cruz Pier collapsed and floated away as stunned visitors looked on.
Two people were rescued while a third person was able to swim to shore. Amazingly, there were no major injuries reported.
Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley said the section of the wharf that collapsed had been damaged over time. The structure was in the middle of a $4 million renovation following destructive storms last winter.
