FRESNO, CA (KMJ) The ongoing feud between President-elect Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom has become electrified.
Newsom said Monday that the Golden State will intervene if Trump takes the axe to the electric vehicle tax credit passed under the Biden administration.
President #45 and #47 has not committed to killing the EV tax.
“Consumers continue to prove the skeptics wrong – zero-emission vehicles are here to stay,” Newsom said in a statement. “We will intervene if the Trump Administration eliminates the federal tax credit, doubling down on our commitment to clean air and green jobs in California,” he continued.
Under the current law, consumers can receive a tax credit of up to $7,500 for a new electric, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell vehicles and up to $4,000 for a used one.
As for Trump, he’s on record as saying he’s a “big fan of electric cars” but also a “fan of gasoline-propelled cars” and hybrids.
Newsom would need the support of the California Legislature to restart the proposed rebate program that came to an end in 2023.
