FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The American Red Cross is offering Shelter Academy on Oct. 19.
Across the Southeast, stories of tragedy and destruction are being told again and again by those who’ve lived through the nightmares of Hurricanes Milton and Helene. The American Red Cross is there, helping as people come to grips with their losses, and we’ll be there in the months to come.
On Monday night, more than 2,300 people spent the night in emergency shelters across the affected states.
Some 2,100 Red Crossers, alongside partners, are providing food, shelter and a shoulder to lean on across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee. In the last three weeks, more than 50 disaster workers from Central California have answered the call to help.
This Saturday, the Red Cross is hosting a shelter volunteer training on October 19 in Fresno to quickly train those interested in serving as a shelter volunteer on large disaster relief operations this fall.
It’s an opportunity for local community members to become a shelter volunteer in a day and deploy to help communities reeling from the effects of the hurricanes in the weeks and months ahead.

Just in Time Shelter Training
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Red Cross Sheltering Volunteer. With shelter workers needed now for Hurricanes Helene and Milton more needed for future disasters, we are hosting Sheltering Trainings around the region to train volunteers to become Shelter Workers.
Volunteers who complete this training will be able to respond to local and national relief operations. Current Red Cross volunteers who are not disaster workers and new volunteers are encouraged to attend.
The goal of these in-person Shelter Worker trainings are to expedite the required training for shelter volunteers to deploy in response to major disasters this fall. Volunteers will learn the essential skills needed in a shelter, including deployment and sheltering fundamentals, as well as go through a shelter simulation.
