Report: Fresno Among Worst Summer US Destinations

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) Yes, it’s hot and our crime rate is a problem. Gas and food prices are outrageous.

But as long as the air conditioning works, it’s not that bad in Fresno this time of year – is it?

According to the editors at Forbes Advisor, it is.

The city of Fresno, is being dragged for being an undesirable Summer destination. But at least we’re not Jacksonville!

The Worst Cities For Summer Travel, Ranked

More than half of Americans plan to take a vacation trip before the end of September, according to a number of summer travel surveys. But potential complications like flight delays or car accidents could threaten that summer fun, and travel insurance might be a smart investment.

Forbes Advisor compared the 43 most populated cities with available data across 16 metrics to uncover the worst places to visit during the summer. We found that Jacksonville, Florida is the worst vacation spot for summer travel, while Minneapolis ranks as the best.

1. Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville’s score: 100 out of 100

  • Scores lowest for walkability and third lowest for access to public transportation.
  • Jacksonville International Airport has the second highest percentage of disrupted summer flights (28.9% on average).
  • Sixth fewest parking lots and garages (1.49 per 100,000 residents).
  • Eighth highest crime rate (63.99 crimes per 1,000 residents).
  • Ranks eighth for fewest restaurants with four or more stars on Tripadvisor (728).

2. Colorado Springs, Colorado 

Colorado Springs’ score: 99.59 out of 100

  • Colorado Springs Airport has the highest percentage of delayed, canceled or diverted flights (29.5% on average) and the fourth lowest percentage of fully reimbursed property loss and damage claims (13.6%) during the summer.
  • Second worst transit score.
  • Third-highest median cost of tours and activities ($152).
  • Ranks fifth for fewest restaurants with four or more stars on Tripadvisor (626).

3. Fresno, California
Fresno’s score: 78.54 out of 100

  • Most expensive median cost for tours and activities ($279).
  • Fewest tourist attractions with four or more stars on Tripadvisor (72).
  • Fewest restaurants with four or more stars on Tripadvisor (518).
  • Second fewest parking lots and garages (0.79 per 100,000 residents).
  • Third-highest gasoline prices ($5.33 per gallon for regular).
