SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) – The 16-year-old drowning victim at Shaver Lake has been identified as Alejandro Araujo.

Orosi High School confirmed that he was a junior at the school.

Officials say counselors and other district staff members are available to help students navigate the tragedy.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened shortly before 1:00 pm on Sunday.

Deputies say Araujo was on a pontoon boat with a friend’s family.

They believe he jumped into the water with his floatation device, but at one point, it separated, and he went underwater.

Araujo was found about 15 feet underwater.

Investigators say it was a team effort to get him into a rescue boat, but then he died.

Authorities say they are still trying to piece together what happened with Araujo as the investigation continues.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says they have two patrol boats on the water and will reevaluate if they need more deputies on the water as we get closer to the 4th of July.
