Large Sinkhole Opens In Madera Near Reported Sewer Line Failure, Residents Asked to Limit Water Use

MADERA, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) – The City of Madera is once again residents to limit their water use after another sewer line break.

A large sinkhole has also been reported near the break, in the area of W. Pecan and S. Granada.

The California Highway Patrol says the rear trailer of a big rig fell into the hole.

The sinkhole and sewer break are near the location where crews have been working to repair a sewer trunk failure.

A trunk is a large pipe that collects sewage from other smaller sewer lines across the area.

Officials say drinking water is safe to use but has asked residents to avoid non-essential water use, including laundry, dishes and long showers and baths, as that water ends up in the sewer after it’s used.

The first sewer line failure happened last week on Avenue 13, west of Granada Drive.

That led city leaders to declare a local state of emergency.
