Calif. Bill Would Mandate Speed Governors on Vehicles

SACRAMENTO, CA (KMJ) Legislation introduced this week would require new cars sold in California to be outfitted with a device that would limit how fast one could drive.

The bill, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would automatically prevent cars and trucks of the 2027 model year or later from going 10 mph or more over the speed limit.

Wiener, who introduced SB 961 on Wednesday, told the San Francisco Chronicle his bill is an effort to reduce the number of traffic deaths in the Bay Area and in California.

“The tragic reality is that a lot of people are being severely injured or dying on our streets in San Francisco and throughout the country, and it’s getting worse,” Wiener told the Chronicle.
