Calif. Republicans Attempt to Repeal AB 5

SACRAMENTO, CA (KMJ) Republican lawmakers joined business advocates on Tuesday to announce new efforts in their fight to protect independent contractors by repealing the controversial law known as AB 5.

GOP legislators say they will introduce the bill that, if passed, would repeal state limits on contractors imposed by AB 5. Getting Gov. Newsom to sign such legislation, however, is highly unlikely.

Meantime, on the federal level, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) says he will introduce legislation that will challenge the Biden administration’s new rule that creates, what critics consider, national restrictions on independent contracting.

Assemblymember Kate Sanchez

Assemblymember Kate Sanchez (R-Rancho Santa Margarita) said “AB 5 has been bad for our workers, bad for our economy and bad for California as a whole”. “So many working moms like myself, who are also raising kids, managing the households were devastated by the effects of AB 5 because they lost access to hundreds of flexible professions.”

“I’ve been told by many of these women, they have lost their livelihoods as bookkeepers, artists, family care givers, designers and hair stylist because of this distributive law. It is time to end the madness and restore the American Dream here in California by repealing AB5,” stated Sanchez.

“Here in California, we’ve seen firsthand the disastrous consequences of AB 5. Joe Biden and Julie Su’s efforts to expand it nationwide will destroy the careers of millions of hardworking independent contractors,” said Assembly GOP Leader James Gallagher. “We should be helping and encouraging people to start businesses and build careers – this Biden/Su proposal does the exact opposite.”
