FRESNO, CA (KMJ) Comedian Bill Maher sat down with California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday evening’s edition of HBO’s Real Time and discussed a number of top-of-mind issues – including the recent drought, gender-neutral toy mandates and more.
At 2:45 into the discussion, Maher turned his targets on California agriculture and specifically almond growers. “Take on big almonds”, he told the potential Presidential hopeful in a dig about wasteful use of water. “You’re right about this,” Newsom responded and then spun his water strategies in several other directions.
California produces 80% of the world’s almonds and 100% of the United States commercial supply.
Almond farming and manufacturing contributed an estimated $10 billion to the California economy in 2023.
