FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A man in the United States illegally, who was convicted of killing a boy when he sped through a Fresno County stop sign in 2019, is arrested again.
Back on December 4, 2019, witnesses saw Karmjit Singh driving more than 100 mph when he struck a vehicle at Bethel and Rose. 8-year-old Maverick Martzen and his parents were inside the vehicle, driving home from a birthday party.
Maverick died days later, and his parents were badly injured.
35-year-old Singh was in his brother’s black BMW, and was not supposed to be driving because his license was suspended from a prior DUI in Tulare County in 2016.
At the time of the crash his blood alcohol was not high enough to be prosecuted for a DUI. Singh was instead convicted of Vehicular Manslaughter without a DUI.
He served less than 5 years in prison before being released.
Arrest records show 40-year-old Singh was taken into custody again on Dec. 4, 2023, on a felony dui charge. He had a blood alcohol content of .08 at the time.
Singh was brought into custody by ICE for an expired VISA and placed under an INS detainer with no bail.
Maverick Martzen’s family released a statement upon hearing of the new charge.
As we near the five year anniversary of the death of our son, Maverick, it was devastating to be informed that Mr. Singh has once again been arrested for the same crime that killed our precious boy.
The District Attorney Office’s decision to change their charges, and opt for a very lenient plea deal, resulted in tying the judges hands in sentencing Mr. Singh to the maximum of six years in prison.
After serving less than four years, Mr. Singh was released and now has shown, once again, that he continues to disregard the law and commit more crimes. It’s very upsetting to know the judicial system has not only failed our family but also our community. We pray the DAs office realizes the mistake they have made and chooses to hold Mr. Singh accountable for his continued reckless behavior. Our hope is that this time they hold him to a much higher standard as we would never want another family to suffer the way we continue to.
Maverick Martzen’s parents began a foundation to bless student athletes in Maverick’s honor with Scholarships.
