MADERA, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — One person was injured after a shooting at a supermarket in Madera on Christmas Day.
Madera police say the shooting happened at the Vallarta Supermarket on County Club Drive near Clark Street.
When officers arrived, witnesses shared both the victim and suspect were gone.
“When we were on scene, he later returned to the scene, and we discovered he sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was then transported to a local hospital,” explained Sgt. Chris Anaya.
The wounded man is expected to be okay.
Police say the shooting was an isolated incident.
Officers added that the suspect was an adult male who fled the area on foot.
Sgt. Anaya feels confident with the evidence they’ve gathered to catch the gunman.
“There’s surveillance at Vallarta, which we were able to collect and follow up on, so there’s a lot of information for us to follow up on at this time,” said Sgt. Anaya.
As the hunt for the suspect continues, witnesses say today’s shooting was scary to experience.
“The only day that everyone is supposed to be with family and friends. It’s like, you know, we have to deal with that, you know, and it’s just not fair,” said Joseph Martinez.
Martinez was inside the store when the shooting happened.
He didn’t want to appear on camera but did talk to us over the phone.
He says security and several people started running into the store when the gunman started shooting.
“We kind of go through this whole thing of like every day. We’re always hearing about someone getting shot or something happening at somewhere in the public,” Martinez said.
