Mell’s Mutts, Paw Squad 559 & City of Fresno Holds Free Microchip Event Friday

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A free microchipping event is taking place in Fresno on Friday.

Mell Garcia is behind a drive to get pets in the city of Fresno fitted with a microchip.

She says Fresno has been having a problem with overcrowding of animals at its shelters.

As of January 1st, 2024, no strays will be taken in at Fresno Animal Services.

New Year’s is right around the corner, which is the second highest day for dogs to run away and get lost due to fireworks, according to Garcia.

Her organization, Mell’s Mutts, is partnering with Paw Squad 559 and spearheading a free microchip event with the City of Fresno.

She spoke with KMJ’s Afternoon Drive on Wednesday with host E Curtis Johnson, and guest host, Terry Slatic, about the need to be able to identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners.
