Deal Reached: FUSD Teacher Strike Averted

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno Unified and the Fresno Teachers Association have reached an agreement to keep teachers in the classroom — just one day before a district-wide strike deadline.

The district and teachers union took part in a joint news conference Tuesday morning to announce the new contract agreement.

FTA president Manuel Bonilla says it includes across-the-board class size reductions, investments in new classroom spaces, plans to get a nurse at every school site, multi-million dollar investments in students’ social and emotional supports and a competitive salary package for educators.

Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson also says the new contract supports both teachers and students while maintaining a fiscally strong budget for the district.

“As educators and as a community, we’ve made it clear that students thrive when educators thrive, and educators thrive when leaders value their hard work, when they value that tireless dedication and are committed to providing adequate support,” Bonilla said.

“We’ve all made a comprehensive commitment as adults that we’re going to spend our entire lives in the service of children, and in that spirit, it’s my hope that we’ll respectfully continue to move forward,” Nelson said.
