Fresno – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) held a Workers Memorial Ceremony, Wednesday, to remember Highway Workers and other employees who have lost their lives while on the job.
Since 1921, a total of 191 Caltrans workers have died in the line of duty.
Wednesday’s ceremony was held in front of the Caltrans District Office located at 1352 W. Olive Avenue, Fresno.
This ceremony featured a temporary memorial of 191, orange safety cones representing fallen Caltrans workers.
The Caltrans District 6 Honor Guard performed a special tribute to memorialize the Caltrans Workers who made the ultimate sacrifice while maintaining California’s transportation system.
In August 2022, Caltrans District 6 suffered the loss of Construction Engineer, Ali Shabazz when he was involved in a fatal traffic collision while on duty, in route to a job site. The Shabazz family was in attendance on Wednesday to help honor and pay tribute to their family member.
Impaired, reckless, and inattentive drivers traveling through work zone areas have caused the majority of work zone deaths. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol want to remind drivers to stay attentive and undistracted while driving and to be cognizant of workers and vehicles in construction and maintenance areas. Please Slow for the Cone Zone.
