Fresno, Calif. – The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office is reminding football fans to stick
to the “Go Safely” game plan and designate a sober driver if you plan on drinking at a Super Bowl
LVI watch party.

On Super Bowl LVI Sunday (Feb. 13, multiple Fresno County law enforcement agencies will have
additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol
and/or drugs.

“It is absolutely fine to enjoy the big game and cold beer, but it shouldn’t be only the Bengals and
Rams who have a plan going into Sunday,” said District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp. “Figure out
your designated driver before the game or plan a way to get home that doesn’t involve getting
behind the wheel and putting lives in danger. Whatever team you’re cheering for this weekend,
let’s make sure that the only loss this weekend is on the football field.”

The District Attorney’s Office reminds the public that alcohol is not the only substance that
impairs. Marijuana, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications can all affect your ability
to drive safely. Do your research and understand the potential side effects of certain drugs.

“The spirit of good sportsmanship is grounded in respect for others,” said Smittcamp. “For those
of us not playing in the game on Sunday, make the choice that shows respect for yourself and
others and don’t drive impaired.”

The Fresno Police Department will be holding another DUI enforcement patrol on February 13th, 2021 and a series of DUI enforcement patrols throughout the year to keep roadways safe.

The Fresno Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or ”operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
