The White House said President Joe Biden is set to campaign for Newsom in California early next week.
Biden carried California in the election by 29 percentage points over then-President Donald Trump.
The last time voters in California recalled a governor was in 2003 when Democratic Gov. Gray Davis was replaced by Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The recall election is Sept. 14.
