(KMJ) – California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta puts forth new guidelines against hate crimes.
Overall hate crimes increased 31% -just over a thousand in 2019 to 1,300 in 2020.
The number of hate crimes against Asians in California rose 107% – from 43 in 2019 to 89 in 2020.
Attorney General Rob Bonta calls it an ‘epidemic of hate.’
Bonta has proposed investing $100 million into supporting survivors, and $200 million to improve community-based response.
There are now updated brochures in 25 languages to help victims report hate crimes.
Some Tips:
- Call 911 if you sense you’re in immediate danger.
- Write down the exact words used during an attack.
- Save evidence.
- Take photos if it’s safe.
- Get the contact information of any witnesses or other victims.
- Reach out to community organizations that deal with hate crimes.
