FRESNO, CA. (KMJ) — Governor Gavin Newsom was in Fresno Wednesday morning to provide an update on COVID-19 and a new vaccine distribution site in the Central Valley.

The news conference was held at the Fresno Fairgrounds.

While the governor was speaking inside, protesters outside the gates chanted “Recall Gavin” and “Recall Newsom.”

Gov. Newsom said there have been 5 million people in the state to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

Newsom said while California is making significant progress, he says “we are falling short of our goals of making sure that we truly are being equitable in the distribution and administration of this vaccine.”

The governor said a vaccination site will be created at a local “City College” but did not specify which city college.

The City of Fresno tweeted it will be at Reedley College.

Newsom said the new site should be open by Feb. 18.

There was speculation by Valley leaders, including Congressman Jim Costa, that the Save Mart Center in Fresno may be a “super station” site, but that was not addressed by Governor Newsom during Wednesday’s news conference.

Gov. Newsom was also in San Diego on Monday and Oakland last week to announce vaccination super sites being created to help vaccinate more people.
