SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Republicans in the California state Senate have picked a new legislative leader.
They voted unanimously Wednesday to replace Sen. Shannon Grove of Bakersfield with Sen. Scott Wilk of Santa Clarita.
The change came after two incumbent Republican senators lost their seats in the November election.
Alex Vassar, an unofficial legislative historian at the California State Library, says that left the party with just nine of the 40 seats in the Senate – their lowest number since 1883.
Grove will keep her Senate seat but no longer be the party’s leader in the chamber. Wilk commended Grove for her hard work and commitment.
