FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Golden State Killer begins life in prison.
74-year-old Joseph DeAngelo was taken to North Kern State Prison in Delano on Tuesday.
Officials will then decide the prison where he will permanently serve his sentence.
The former Exeter police officer was identified through DNA tracing and arrested in 2018—32 years after he murdered his last victim.
DeAngelo pleaded guilty in June to 13 murders and 13 rape-related charges.
The judge sentenced him in August to 11 life terms without the possibility of parole to be served consecutively, plus 15 life terms and eight years, saying DeAngelo will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
His crime spree terrorized California between 1975 and 1986.
His plea deal saved him from the death penalty.
