(KMJ) – Fresno Police say the suspect shot and killed by officers Sunday night in the central part of the city was wanted on multiple warrants from across the country.
This all began as an attempted carjacking on the 1300 block of Esther Way around 9:30 p.m. Officers say 32-year old Gregory Putnik (pictured below) was armed with a broom handle when he tried to take someone car. That set off a series of incidents, that included Putnik taking a rifle from a neighbor who tried to confront him.
He eventually made his way to the 900 block of North Pine, where he was confronted by officers. Fresno Police say, despite numerous orders for him to drop his weapon and pleas for his peaceful surrender, officers opened fire on Putnik. Emergency aid was given before he was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
According to Fresno Police, Gregory Putnik had multiple warrants from across the United States and was listed as an
armed and dangerous felon. He was also listed as a parolee at large out of Springfield, Illinois with a primary violation of assault on a police officer.
